How to Calculate GPA: The 4.0 Scale Explained

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is simply total grade points divided by total credit hours. Here's the full method.

Step 1: Convert grades to points

On the standard 4.0 scale: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.

Step 2: Weight by credits

Multiply each grade's points by the course's credit hours. A 4-credit B (12 points) counts more than a 1-credit A (4 points).

Step 3: Divide

Example: A in a 3-credit course (12) + B in a 4-credit course (12) + A− in a 3-credit course (11.1) = 35.1 points ÷ 10 credits = 3.51 GPA.
